Wapiti Festival - Fernie
Tomorrow night, 7 pm, Bubba Tres opens up the festival. A 35 minute set is in the works (see the ArtsWells line-up).
Bubba Tres is an Alternative Rock band that began in 2002 as a duet, then grew into a trio, then a foursome, morphing into a group of 5 musicians, each one bringing to the group a unique history and musical talent.
In the Winter of 2011 the group lost two members (Mark and Andrew) who both left to pursue their own dreams and - as is so often the case - life and distance got in the way. Now made up of three members, Bubba Tres has upped the visuals and energy of the act, and they have found a new energy and drive to be alternative. More time has been spent of phrasing and on 'space' between the notes, with the new songs being more complicated in chords, notes, and leads.
They play original tunes with a definite leaning toward Zombies, hookers, and the very dark side of whacked out humans who have failed in their attempts to fit society....
In the past, when they where known as "Big Bubba Tres" (sounded too much like a Blues band), they spent a season doing a Johnny Cash tribute show....
When they cover a song, they make it their own, from doubling up the speed (like 'Ring of Fire'), through changing the instrumentation (like on 'Like A Virgin'), to simply turning up the volume ('War Pigs', 'Baba O'Riley', and others). They use electronic backing tracvks to spice up songs like Iron Man as well as many original tunes.
'Bubba Tres' uses guitars, ukuleles, accordions, mandolins, drums, basses, trumpets, electric violins, keyboards, synthesizers, megaphones, kids toys, clarinets, and other sound-producing implements of terror to energize and entertain the crowd.
